Riyadh Season’s winter music festival Boulevard Mix sets the mood

RIYADH: An exhibition showcasing a smart city being built as part of the NEOM project in northwestern Saudi Arabia has gone on display in Riyadh.

The Line development will be constructed using revolutionary architectural designs and urban planning concepts and the exhibition will run until April 29 at the Diriyah Biennale Foundation for Contemporary Art in Riyadh’s Jax district.

Visitors will be given a glimpse into life without streets, cars, or emissions in the futuristic linear city.

A spokesman for the project told Arab News: “The future is here. Unlike traditional cities, The Line will run on 100 percent renewable energy, prioritize health, and promote a sense of well-being for residents and visitors over transportation and infrastructure.”

The city will be 200 meters wide, 170 kilometers long, and rise 500 meters above sea level and will contribute to conserving 95 percent of NEOM’s land and support environmental sustainability.

HIGHLIGHTS

• THE LINE Experience runs until April 29 at the Diriyah Biennale Foundation for Contemporary Art in Riyadh’s Jax district. Free tickets can be booked online.

• THE LINE is NEOM’s smart city of the future that maximizes sustainable living with innovative design and infrastructure. The city will be 200 meters wide, 170 kilometers long, and rise 500 meters above sea level, with the capacity to house 9 million people.

“There will be no cars, but a high-speed railway will take residents and visitors across its length,” the spokesman said.

He pointed out that The Line design was based on a new concept of zero gravity urbanism, the idea of layering city functions vertically while enabling inhabitants to move seamlessly in the city in three directions – up, down, and across – offering quick access to offices, schools, parks, and residential facilities.

The Line’s unique modular design ensures that all facilities and amenities can be accessed within a five-minute walk.

Using an innovative design that requires minimal space and less water, hydroponics gardens will grow fruit, vegetables, and flowers in half the time of traditional agriculture methods.

The Line, which will become home to 9 million people, was announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, chairman of the NEOM board of directors, in July.

NEOM has several ongoing megaprojects, one of them being Trojena, a year-round winter sports complex designed by Iraqi British architect Zaha Hadid. And what will be the first outdoor ski resort in the Gulf Cooperation Council region, is set to host the Asian Winter Games in 2029.

Another megaproject is Sindalah Island, a luxury tourist destination.

Exhibition visitors can opt to take a guided tour conducted in Arabic and English, while free tickets can be booked at https://theline.halayalla.com/en-us.

Ben L’Oncle Soul – “A Rose…”

French soul artist Ben L’Oncle Soul is set to release a new album titled Is It You? on February 17. And he has just unveiled the first single, “A Rose…”. That track arrived with a nice-looking music video directed by Harry Delgas. “A Rose…” is a beautiful romance-driven piece. About it, Ben says,  “I’ve always been fascinated by roses… Every time I look at one, I fall in love again. When my friend Alex read me this poem by Robert Frost, the instruments just started to dance. The accompanying video for ‘A Rose’ is a journal style collection of visual fragments and scribbles. Glimpses of the everyday. And it is at the same time, an exploration of the vertical video that due to smartphones and social media has not only become commonplace, but also a way we look at the world”.

Raegan Sealy shares “Make ‘em Jealous” feat. The Gang of Angels choir – Aipate

British-born, Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Raegan Sealy flaunts her velvety vocals on new song, “Make ‘em Jealous”. This single is a collaboration with The Gang of Angels, an all-female choir from Nottingham, UK.

“Make ‘em Jealous” is an invigorating retro soul tune with elements of indie. Speaking about the inspiration, Sealy said: “What is it that we tell ourselves in order to ‘stay?’ How does our ego react to accommodate disrespect? And how hilarious is that, when you think about it? This emotional push and pull in these dynamics is truly often like a Laurel and Hardy sketch.”

The song was written by Raegan alongside Honey Williams (of The Gang of Angles) and produced by Jay Diggs and Robin Buyer.

Johnathan Machen, aka Profit, sells sanctuary in his hip-hop pop track, Refuge – Independent Music – New Music

Singer, hip-hop artist and songwriter Johnathan Machen, aka Profit, is living and breathing proof that regardless of how many battle scars your trauma brandishes you with, success will always be in the sightline if you look for it.

Following his viral debut single, Daydreaming, which has amassed over 1 million streams on Spotify alone since it dropped in 2021, his sophomore single, Refuge, is a consoling reminder that everyone deserves sanctuary regardless of the hostility the world has shown you before.

The country hip-hop-meets-pop instrumentals against his compassion-soaked vocals that run through the lyrics and affirm everyone deserves another soul to fall into hits all the right evocative notes while unravelling as a hook-rife melodic earworm.

Johnathan Machen’s distinctive approach to music starts to contextualise around the understanding that his life experiences shaped his creativity more than any artist came before him. After suffering from extensive burns that covered 90% of his body, his self-confidence ebbing away at an early age through bullying and becoming a single father of three while dealing with the grief of losing his mother and everything he owned, music has always been his peace and motivation. Now at 35 years old, in a happy marriage, he is here to confirm that injustice never has to last forever.

Refuge was released on January 6th; check it out on Spotify.

Music can’t be defeated, Original Love musician declares in 1st album in 3½ years

The Yomiuri Shimbun
Takao Tajima

“Why doesn’t everyone just dance and shout to the music once in a while?” musician Takao Tajima said about the latest album from his solo project Original Love. “I think perhaps that’s what this album is saying.”

“Music, Dance & Love” is his first new album in 3½ years.

In that intervening period, a series of unimaginable events happened, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

“The world is totally different from what it was 3½ years ago,” he said. “Things happened one after the other, and I had to rewrite the lyrics many times.”

He altered the lyrics of the album’s lead track, “The Invasion,” at least three times. He had never before rewritten lyrics so significantly other than tweaking them.

The song has an international feel, reminiscent of South American and Middle Eastern music.

He sings in a stern voice, anger underlying the song. “We all need to say, ‘Something is wrong with the world.’ The words should be direct,” he said. “If you use expressions that are hard to understand, you will never get the message across.”

Tajima was inspired to create “Music, Dance & Love” after learning from news reports that there are people who enjoy dance parties in a town in Ukraine that has been attacked.

“It’s wonderful and cool,” he said. “I was happy that music could live on in such a situation.

“You can’t stop the music, no matter how you might be intimidated.”

That message can be heard in the songs on the album that are a mixture of soul and rock.

He was conscious of having a “danceable sound” throughout, with a groove that makes listeners sway.

“Amid the pandemic, I wanted to make something that would cheer people up when they were wondering what was going to happen and make them want to work a little harder,” he said. “I’m just trying to convey the message that music will never let you down,”

The year of 2021 was the 30th anniversary of Original Love’s debut. His solo act had hits in the 1990s with songs such as “Kiss.” A version of that song appears on the new album.

For the album, Tajima invited musicians who had backed him in the past. He could also feel himself growing as a vocalist.

“No matter how good the performance is, if you don’t sing well, it won’t be funky. Singing is the most difficult part,” he said. “I’ve been making music for this long, I’m finally starting to see what it’s all about.”

The times may have changed, but music has always been a part of his life.

“If it weren’t for music, I’d probably be dead by now,” Tajima said. “I have to live with music all my life.”
