Eurovision 2021 Review: Romania – Roxen – Amnesia

Roxen brings a modern pop number to Eurovision representing Romania
Romania was planning on sending young pop talent Roxen to Eurovision last year and was one of the first countries to ask their representative to try again in 2021 after the cancellation of the contest. Her ballad ‘Alcohol You’ ended up in the top 10 of my ranking of last year’s participating songs and was considered to be a favorite to qualify for the big final in its semi final. Will she be able to actually do it this year with her new song ‘Amnesia’?

‘Amnesia’ is a midtempo pop song written by songwriters Adelina Stinga and Victor Bourosu. The modern sounding track also has a lyrical topic that is used often in contemporary pop music: self love and struggles with mental health. Over the chorus, Roxen sings how she has lost herself and forgot how to love herself, while telling others who are experiencing the same that they are not alone.

Roxen has a beautiful tone of voice that suits this contemporary production perfectly, although they could have toned down the autotune in some places. It is one of those songs in the contest that I could actually picture being played on hit radio stations these days. She has been compared to Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa before and although these comparisons might be lazy, they at least show Roxen has a current appeal. I would argue that the hook and build up of ‘Amnesia’ are impressive enough to stick with the viewers, even when competing with numerous other countries. My only slight issue with this entry is that the lyrics are often hard to understand because of Roxen’s pronunciation of the English words. Some of the lines are also written in a clunky matter, but we will forgive them as at least the melodies are more than on point.

In the music video we see Roxen dressed in black, interacting with a group of modern dancers dressed in white. The choreography is a treat to watch and seems to beautifully depict the struggles with mental health of the lyrics. A similar staging in Rotterdam in May could definitely bring in more points for Romania. Either way, ‘Amnesia’ is a final worthy song to these ears.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Bejeweled’ music video features Laura Dern, Dita Von Teese and a ‘psychotic amount’ of Easter eggs

Taylor Swift’s star-studded music video for her song “Bejeweled” is here.

The video features members of the rock band HAIM, actress Laura Dern, burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese, makeup artist Pat McGrath, and singer and producer Jack Antonoff.

While appearing on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Monday night, the singer said she aimed to make a music video “that is just for the fans who like certain things, like glitter and Easter eggs and lots of little cameos.”

“I was thinking about ‘Midnights,’ the concept, and I was like where do we hear about midnights a lot?” she recalled. “We hear about it a lot when we talk about the Cinderella fairy tale and so I was like what if we did a little twist on a Cinderella story and I could cast my friends? My best friends, the Haim sisters, what if they played the stepsisters?”

“And I was like what if we really shoot for the stars with the other castings,” she continued. “What if it was Oscar winner Laura Dern playing my stepmother?”

She then recalled how she got in touch with Dern to star in the video with her: “I was like, ‘Oscar winner Laura Dern, hello, I’ve written a script. It’s a one scene script in which you are going to call me a tired, tacky wench.’ And she was like, ‘I’m down.'”

Swift added that Dern, who she now considers a friend, is “the coolest” and “so funny” and was a pleasure to direct.

“And so then we have one of my favorite performers, who I think has been so influential in pop music, and I’ve nicknamed this character not the ‘fairy godmother’ but the ‘fairy goddess’ and that is played by Dita Von Teese.”

Describing Von Teese as “one of the most iconic performers,” Swift added, “It’s so exciting to get to see her do what she does in this.”

“I had a wonderful time working with Taylor’s stylist Joseph Cassell on creating the costumes with Catherine D’Lish, and coaching Taylor on the act… and what a delight to perform alongside her for the video!” Von Teese said in a statement.

“Taylor’s generosity radiates in all that she does,” her statement continued. “I’m deeply touched by her kindness in acknowledging not only me, but burlesque, an American artform to which I have dedicated my life. It was a true pleasure to share my martini glass act with her.”

Swift said this video in particular has “a psychotic amount” of Easter eggs.

“We have a PDF file for the Easter eggs in this video because there are so many that we could not keep track,” she shared.

Fans have already lit social media up with theories on the video’s Easter eggs.

Taylor Swift/Instagram

An image posted to Instagram teases the release of a new video from Taylor Swift, Oct. 24, 2022.

Hours before the music video was released, Swift teased the video on Instagram with a still of herself sitting down with a sparkly blanket draped over her lap.

In the caption, she hinted that the “Bejeweled” music video would be her own spin on the classic fairytale, “Cinderella.”

“Midnight, what a storied and fabled hour…” she wrote. “On this sparkling evening I’ll be releasing my twist on a fairytale we all know. The one about the girl and her step sisters and the clock striking 12…”

“This video is wild, whimsical and created SPECIFICALLY for you, my beloved fans who have paved this shimmering path,” she added. “Look out for some dazzling cameos! Join us later for a very Bejeweled premiere.”

Leading up to the album’s release, the singer shared a trailer during Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime teasing the related music videos that fans could look forward to.

The first music video released after the album dropped was for the song”Anti-Hero.”

“Midnights” has already broken several streaming records, including the most streamed album in a single day on Spotify and the record for the biggest pop album of all time on Apple Music by first-day streams. The song “Lavender Haze” debuted at No. 1 on Apple Music Top 100: Global.

Swift also had the most first-day album streams globally of any artist, as well as the most Alexa requests ever.

Rihanna To Make Long-Awaited Comeback With ‘Black Panther’ Single

Rihanna is set to make her long-awaited and highly-anticipated musical comeback with a single for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack later this week.

Marvel Studios confirmed the news earlier today (October 26) following rumors spreading online. The company shared a short teaser on social media that saw the film’s name morph into a single ‘R’, with the date “10.28.22” beneath it.

Earlier this month, The New York Times journalist Kyle Buchanan reported that Rihanna’s single – the title of which is currently unknown – would be the end-credits song for the Black Panther sequel. The song will arrive on Friday (October 28), with the film following on November 11.

The track will mark the pop icon’s first solo release in six years, following her 2016 album Anti. Since that record, she has collaborated with the N.E.R.D. on “Lemon,” PartyNextDoor on “Believe It,” Future on “Selfish,” DJ Khaled on “Wild Thoughts,” and Kendrick Lamar on “Loyalty.”

Despite the long wait for new music from the superstar – and her recently becoming a mother for the first time – Rihanna reassured fans earlier this year they were “still going to get music” from her in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Last month (September 26), Rihanna was announced as the headliner for the Super Bowl LVII halftime show, which will take place at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on February 12, 2023. Speaking to TMZ after the announcement, the singer said of the prestigious performance: “I’m nervous, but I’m excited.”

In January, Rihanna’s Unapologetic single “Stay” passed the one billion streams mark on YouTube. Originally released in 2012, the track features guest vocals from Mikky Ekko and, upon its release, peaked at No.3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

Listen to the best of Rihanna on Apple Music and Spotify.

Eurovision 2021 Review: Australia – Montaigne – Technicolour

Montaigne brings ‘Technicolour’ to the Eurovision stage
Since Australia joined Eurovision back in 2015, they have never missed the final and only once finished outside of the top 10. Last year, they selected Montaigne and her dramatic pop song ‘Don’t Break Me’ in a national final. Although there were already plans to host another national selection in 2021, the Australian broadcaster changed their mind after the 2020 contest got cancelled. They decided to give Montaigne another shot and let her select her song internally. And so she did with the track ‘Technicolour’.

Montaigne wrote ‘Technicolour’ together with producer Dave Hammer, specifically with Eurovision in mind. The song is all about the courage to be vulnerable and daring to ask for help, as Montaigne believes we are stronger in solidarity. With that message, one might expect a somewhat cheesy midtempo pop number, but that is not at all what ‘Technicolour’ is. Montaigne serves a bonkers, bouncing, heavily electronic pop banger. The production reminds me of early days La Roux while her expressive vocals echo Marina (and the Diamonds). Both vocally and in terms of production, it is all over the place in the best way.

All productional and vocal quirks aside, ‘Technicolour’ does have an undeniable chorus. Yes, it is a bit repetitive at times, but that key change in the last time it comes around makes you forget all about that. The lyrics are a bit predictable and slightly cheesy at times (“If we stand together, we can do whatever”), but also serves quite unexpected moments (“We got style and lasers, yeah, time to take off your cloaks”). Even lyrically it is all over the place. You can count on Montaigne to at least keep things interesting.

‘Technicolour’ live on the Eurovision stage is something I will be eagerly looking forward to from this day on. I have to admit Montaigne’s ‘Don’t Break Me’ was in my top 5 of Eurovision 2020 songs, but I wasn’t a fan of the live performance both vocally and in terms of staging. ‘Technicolour’ has the potential to turn out even messier on stage, but if she gets it right, this could also be all kinds of brilliant. Either way, I’ll be bopping to this with my life.

Matt Nathanson – “Faster” – Promotional CD – 2 Loud 2 Old Music

“Faster” is the first single off Matt Nathanson’s 2011 album ‘Modern Love’. The single in the U.S. came out on March 29, 2011 and it broke the Top 100 landing at #74…so not getting close to the Top 40 countdown. However, on the Adult Top 40 Billboard Chart, it reached #11 so the adults dug, kids…I guess not so much.

The promotional copy I found is from the U.K. and according to the note on the front, it was to be released on August, 6th, 2011. It was talking him up and the fact he was opening for Kelly Clarkson’s tour in America and Train in the U.K. Matt was heading to the U.K. to do his own set of shows. That Kelly Clarkson show was the one my oldest daughter and I caught at their Fox Theater, Atlanta stop. My brother-in-law, Ryan, worked with both Kelly and Matt in that year so we got free tickets to the show and ended up meeting Matt that evening and getting autographs and pictures. He was a truly stand-up guy with the way he treated my daughter. He made her feel that she was the most important girl in the room when he talked to her. Really cool.

The song was written by Matt Nathanson and Mark Weinberg and is about a guy that is so in love with this woman. She drives him crazy. His heart beats faster when he is around her, he will do anything for her and can’t stopping thinking about how she makes him feel. There are a couple lines that make think it is also about giving oral sex to her as well with the lines…

It’s the way you swell, slow
Pushing right out of your seams
It’s the way you smile, baby
When you’ve got me on my knees

Whatever it is, it is a fun energetic track. There is a strange hand clap sounding piece and it is strange in the fact it is on a different beat than you’d expect. I have a hard time doing it myself because I have no rhythm. The song is bouncy, light and pure pop bliss. Sugary sweet, but done in a way that only Matt can do and keep it from sounding too generic pop non-sense.

Give the song a listen and let me know what you think. See if you enjoy it as much as I do. It might be too poppy for some, but I don’t care…everyone needs to have some good fun every now and again.

Thanks for stopping by and we will see you again real soon.

NYC pop artist Tripping Jupiter releases “Torn America” music video — MP3s & NPCs

NYC pop artist Tripping Jupiter unveiled the music video for their latest single “Torn America” today.

The visual, which can be seen below, features footage from a slew of protests taking place during the past two years. The artist said this about the song, which features David Bowie collaborator Gail Ann Dorsey on bass:

“I wrote the entire album in the middle of the pandemic. Being at home there was a lot of time to think about what was going on in our country and how it was affecting us. The murder of George Floyd and the subsequent protests were still on my mind. The economic crash and how many workers across the nation were struggling stuck with me as well. And then more recently with the scapegoating of immigrants or members of the LGBTQ+ community – it all just reminded me how all our struggles are connected – and that it is only through a mass movement of people, collectively, that we can transform our nation and our world. All of this and the fast that climate change is happening before our eyes, made me realize that as an artist, I had to say something.”

“Torn America” stems from Tripping Jupiter’s forthcoming studio album Lipstick of the Brave, which will be released on November 4.

Eurovision 2021 Review: Bulgaria – VICTORIA – growing up is getting old

VICTORIA chooses ‘growing up is getting old’ for Eurovision 2021
If it wasn’t for the coronavirus, VICTORIA would have represented her home country Bulgaria at the Eurovision Song Contest last year. Her song ‘Tears Getting Sober’ was one of the favorites for the win (and this blogs number 1) and although she sadly isn’t allowed to use this song again this year, the Bulgarian broadcaster decided to ask her back for 2021. She continued to put out excellent pop music and used her debut EP a little dramatic to select her entry for this year’s Eurovision. She asked experts and fans alike for feedback on the tracks on the EP and ended up choosing the song ‘growing up is getting old’ to represent Bulgaria.

To be fair, basically any of the songs on a little dramatic would have done at least a decent job of representing Bulgaria at Eurovision. VICTORIA delivered a beautiful EP with personal stories and beautifully orchestrated tunes. Now if we honestly look at streaming numbers and feedback on the songs, she should have probably gone with ‘imaginary friend’, but as she explained herself, out of the top 2 songs she wanted to choose the one she can perform with all her heart. That is always the right choice, isn’t it?

‘growing up is getting old’, was co-written by VICTORIA with Maya Nalani, Helena Larsson and Oliver Björkvall (he also produced). We already heard last year that VICTORIA masters the art of creating a beautifully orchestrated ballad with lush strings and a magical feeling and she does so once more. She again opens up about her struggles with mental health and anxiety that will be relatable to millennials as well as other generations. The track serves a beautiful full circle moment in the outro where she encourages the listener to try and get back up, because they are worth it. The big swaying chorus is memorable on first listen and would definitely have been a cute singalong moment if she could have performed it to a big crowd in Rotterdam in May.

‘growing up is getting old’ seems to be a composition that could definitely lure in the judges, but also has potential to be a hit with televoters. VICTORIA sounds both nostalgic and on trend in 2021 and the lyrical content must hit home for quite some viewers. She has already shown in the past year that she is an endearing performer with excellent vocals. She is currently within the top 5 of the bookmakers (just like she was last year) and I think she has a real chance to give Bulgaria its fourth top 5 result ever!
