Meet Maxwell Frost, the First Gen Z Pop Stan Elected to Congress – Rolling Stone

You Bring The Pop(ular) Vote

Maxwell Frost believes in universal healthcare, LGBTQ+ rights, abortion access — and in our lord and savior Harry Styles

What’s more shocking, that Republicans failed to garner a red wave on Tuesday’s election night or that Florida just elected a confirmed Harry Styles stan to the House of Representatives? No, Beto O’Rourke didn’t move to another state. The distinction belongs to Maxwell Frost. On Tuesday night, the former National Organizing Director of March for Our Lives became the first Democratic Gen Z member of Congress — running on a platform of gun control, Medicare for All, and addressing the climate crisis. But you know what’s more relatable? His love and loud support of all things pop music, including some of its biggest icons.

After Frost’s victory, several of the Congressman-elect’s old tweets began to resurface — the good kind. A 2014 post provides photographic evidence that Frost was invested in Harry Styles far before his solo career, but decidedly during his best hair phase.

The evidence continues, with old tweets about Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and One Direction (again) proving Frost’s Gen Z dedication to pop music. Congressmen-elect, they’re just like us, right?

Obviously, there’s more to Frost’s platform than a strong desire to hear Styles perform Medicine live. The Congressman-elect ran his campaign on reimagining what justice and safety look like in America and was endorsed by Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Ayanna Pressley, and Reverend Jessie Jackson. Following the election, he’s promised to fight for the rights of Florida citizens — right after he sees The 1975 in concert tomorrow.

Peppler lulled us into optimistic gratitude with his dream folk serenade, Blessed – Independent Music – New Music

Creating ample anticipation for his upcoming dream folk album releasing in early 2023, the acoustic folk artist Peppler exposed his old soul in his lead single, Blessed.

Entwining the warm vintage tones of 60s and 70s folk with a modern signature dream pop sound that only Peppler can call his own, Blessed is effortlessly efficacious in beckoning you into the beguiling grace of the release. Which needed no more than accordant acoustic guitars, a harmonica and Peppler’s consolingly dulcet tones to lull you into gratified catharsis.

Lyrically, Blessed optimistically reinforces the message that we are blessed within ourselves and that trust that it will all work out is never misplaced. It’s a simple message, but one worth reiterating, given our tendency to curse every downfall and diminish everything positive. Notably, artistically thriving within pure, simplistic minimalism is Peppler’s gift, one that he’s worked tirelessly to perfect after eight years of performing live and crafting albums with various projects.

Spotify for Apple Watch gets a redesign with new music experience

Today, Spotify announced a new design language for its Apple Watch app to help users quickly download music to listen to offline while being able to browse and choose their favorite podcasts.

According to a blog post, this new listening experience is now rolling out to Apple Watch users – which means it could take a few days or weeks to be available to all people.

This “improved listening experience” for Spotify users on Apple Watch will let them easily browse and choose their favorite music and podcasts in the “Your Library” section and more quickly download music to listen offline from the Watch itself.

A new design brings a larger artwork for album and podcast covers. This combines with new animations and an added functionality to like a song by swiping it.

In addition, there’s a new blue dot to mark new podcast episodes, so “you’ll never miss fresh episodes from your favorite creators.”

In its blog post, Spotify also announced that the music streaming service now appears in the Ambient mode on Amazon Fire TV QLED Omni Series.

Sometimes, bigger is better—users who’ve been listening to their favorites from the big screen on the Amazon Fire TV QLED Omni Series know that. With the all-new Ambient Experience, your Fire TV Omni QLED Series TV proactively shows helpful information throughout the day and provides hands-free access to your favorite music and Spotify recommendations.

Spotify is also improving its partnership with Delta to put “our own spin on the boarding process” by curating the music that plays overhead as customers find their seats.

Last but not least, for Ray-Ban Stories owners, Spotify added its Tap technology so users can easily enjoy their favorite tunes without taking out their smartphones. The company explains that people need to tap and hold on the side of the glasses to play Spotify. To hear something different, they need to tap and hold again, and the music streaming service will recommend something new.

This event is made possible in part from the Monmouth Arts Renew 2022 Grant, which supports
free arts events and live performances in Monmouth County this year. Schuman Cheese is the
event’s headline sponsor. Lunch Break is the event’s main partner.

Corinne Schaefer, CEO of Creative OPERAtions and a professional opera singer, as well as the artistic director behind this event, recently returned to her roots at the Jersey Shore after wrapping up performances as Carlotta in “Phantom of the Opera,” concluding a decade-long career in Germany.

The Revivalists Debut 4 New Songs, Welcome Roosevelt Collier At The Ryman

The Revivalists left Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on a high note on Monday, delivering a highlight-filled show featuring four new songs and a sit-in from Roosevelt Collier. The concert at the Mother Church of Country Music was the New Orleans roots rock band’s second in as many days.

Following an opening run of “Oh No”, “Change”, and “Bulletproof”, the first debut came with a song called “Long Con”. Sprinkled in among other fan favorites like “Monster”, “Keep Going”, and “Otherside of Paradise”, the David Shaw-led eight-piece dropped another newbie with “Alive”. Toward the end of the main set, The Revivalists delivered another debut with “Good Ol Days” prior to “Got Love” and the closing “Celebration”.

Taking the hallowed stage once again, the band kicked off what would prove a four-song encore with “Gold to Glass” followed by “Zombie”. Sean Johnson then emerged to lend the band a hand on the final debut of the evening, “Kid”, before celebrated pedal steel guitarist and frequent Revivalists collaborator Roosevelt Collier jumped in on lap steel to close the run with the band’s best-known song, “Wish I Knew You”.

BTS featuring in these Hindi songs will leave you wanting for more

BTS needs no introduction and that it is a global sensation is something of a known fact. BTS has a loyal fanbase in India as well and the desi ARMY celebrates the K-pop band members from time to time. While K-pop songs are already a rage, Indians can’t deny their unequivocal love for Bollywood music. So, the desi BTS fans wisecracked some unique creations celebrating their undeniable love for both the music genres. The result will blow you away since BTS performing to these hindi songs will leave you stunned.

From juxtaposing BTS’ choreography to Bollywood actor Sushmita Sen’s song Chunari Chunari from the film Biwi No. 1 to syncing Gangnam Style singer Psy’s dance steps to Main Khiladi Tu Anari song, desi fans’ creativity knows no bounds and boy are they hilarious.

BTS’ choreography clicks with the tunes, beats and lyrics of the song so well that one would wonder whether they composed the dance routine for the Bollywood song. In fact, an Instagram user commented, “Suddenly I forget the original song … Cool ”. Here, take a look at this BTS hindi song and see for yourself.

BTS’ choreography syncs in perfectly with these Hindi songs

If doesn’t feel kosher, then have a look at this one.

All the 90’s kids know what a rage this song was, and we bet the rendition is so much better than the original. We’re sure Ekta Kapoor will agree to that.

In another edited clip which has been doing rounds on Instagram, the band members can be seen dancing to South film Pushpa’s Oo Antava song. Given how the dance composition looks, BTS sure can give Samantha Ruth Prabhu a run for the money. Don’t think so? Check out this quality video made by an Instagram user.

It almost seems as if they danced to Oo Antava song. Ain’t it?

Well, this is not the end. We have a few other unique creations by another Instagram user and we must say his inventiveness is nothing short of impressive. After all who could’ve thought one could see BTS jamming to Washing Powder Nirma, right?

From Galla Goodiyan to Drama Queen song, the lineup is just perfect for any desi BTS fan. Also, it’s not just Bollywood songs to which BTS’ choreography has been set and edited. For all those who have a thing for Haryanvi songs, fret not – there’s something for you as well.

BTS sure enjoys a huge fan following and the ARMY loves its synchronised routines as much it loves its songs. And well fans would some day love to see them actually perform to Bollywood music for real, as of now one could enjoy these quirky edits. These sure serve as a guilty pleasure, doesn’t it?

Review: Tim Burgess, The Fleece

When is a pop star not a pop star?

Tim Burgess, cherubic lead singer of baggy britpoppers The Charlatans and lock down listening party hero, wanders on stage at The Fleece and adjusts a lovely, stripey cardigan.

His seven-piece band gathers around him, he picks up a microphone, looking at it as though he’s never seen one before, and says “Hello. We’re going to play you some nice music”.

There’s no stadium shaking intro tape. There are no lasers and fancy lights. There’s no shadow boxing, Jagger-esque swagger.

When is a pop star not a pop star? Just about now.

Almost certainly what unfolds over the next 70 minutes will have been a disappointment to some. The noisy boys at the bar (please, for the love of John Peel, stop chatting at gigs!) clearly came to drink and sing along to 90s hits.

They look utterly bemused for most of the night and fall into yelling into each other’s ears, arms around shoulders, knuckles dragging on the floor. It is, very much, their loss.

Simply because, you see, this un-pop starry pop star is just brimming with wonderful indie pop songs. In the years before Britpop some amazing records were made; they were jangly and melodic, slightly ramshackle and beautiful.

Burgess has tapped right into this and is making records that might not be organ driven groovers but they are drenched in a gentle charm.

The title track of the latest album, Typical Music, is proper old fashioned indie pop; it’s melodic, ragged and garage-y.

On Lucky Creatures a tiny sliver of Charlatans keyboard pokes through and pure pop ba-ba-bas ricochet around. Both songs lay out exactly where this evening is going to go. The choruses are subtle and nagging, the songs little rickety gobbets of joy.

As these songs build, it becomes obvious that the band that Burgess has around him is pretty amazing. They’re billed as the All Star Band and that is precisely what they prove to be.

One such is the violin player, Helen O’Hara, best known as the fiddle player in Dexy’s Midnight Runners, and she adds textures and flavours to almost every song. Even though she stands in the shadows she utterly shines. She takes great pop songs, like The Mall or Only Took a Year, and perfectly complements that distinctive Burgess voice.

Oh My Corazon is swept along on a tide of piano, keyboards (thanks to Julian Cope/Spiritualized legend Thighpaulsandra) and O’Hara’s violin and leads right into the only moment when Burgess becomes a capital-P pop star.

The Only One I Know isn’t kept back for the encore, it’s right in the middle of the set; throbbing, grooving, pulsing away. It is, undoubtedly, the huge hit single that those noisy boys at the bar want to hear.

It would be foolish to pretend that there was a better track played all night. There wasn’t. However, the final track was Empathy for the Devil and, if anything could come close, then this was it.  A lop-sided, utterly sublime slice of sunshine, a bona fide pop song played by a bona fide pop star.

Spotify India – Vibing, learning, healing and gaming at Spotify IRL

The event brought together creators, artistes and enthusiasts to celebrate and develop on the connection that the Gen Z share with the audio realm

Spotify IRL, held at the Jio World Garden in Mumbai on November 5, brought together creators, artistes and enthusiasts to bond over music, drinks, munchies and refreshing conversations, to celebrate and develop on the connection that the Gen Z share with the audio realm. Peppered over the day were a chain of performances, relevant and fun panel discussions and activities in the respective Spotify pods : Heal, Learn and Game.

The Heal Pod housed numerous sessions and sharing circles with speakers and creators like Rytasha Rathore, Tarini Shah, Renil Abhraham facilitating conversations on issues encompassing social media hatred, accepting yourself and adoring imperfections that define us. With an ambient serenity, the pod was quite comfortably the definition of a safe space that rejuvenated the soul. The Learn Pod had a chain of quizzes on pop culture, music and sex conducted by Aakash Mehta, Raghav Meattle and Leeza Mangaldas which drew immense crowds and the energy inside the pod was through the roof consistently throughout the evening — the highlight was certainly the final quiz of the evening conducted by the ever-charming Leeza Mangaldas which was a fun and enlightening segment on sex education. The Game Pod housed the crowd-magnet VR games, foosball, darts and everything that appealed to the gamers in town.

Weaved with the chain of activities inside the pods, were panel discussions on music and language, the importance of playlists and balancing the grind and drill of work with speakers like Shalmali Kholgade, Jonita Gandhi, Anuv Jain, Pooja Dhingra and others opining on these issues laced with personal experiences. The first panel OoAntaWow had Jonita, Shalmali and Nimrat Khaira debating over the subject of whether language in music matters anymore. Jonita said: “I think when they are listening to something, people need something to relate to, to vibe out. When we say music is universal and has no language, it’s the production and the music that is brought together to appeal to everyone, so that they can sing along or even dance to it, bringing something that initiates a connection. They are able to appreciate languages they haven’t even heard before, and I think that is incredibly important. When I’m recording something in a language that I don’t speak in, I sit with the lyricist and the composure, I try to know what each word means, bringing in an element of the same to the mood of the song. It is also very important to ensure that the native speakers of the language don’t get distracted from connecting with the song if I’m not getting the words right.” Shalmali who has sung and delivered hits in different languages added, ” I think the way the instruments are installed into the scope of the song is independent of the language. The way the words fit into the rhythm of the song makes or breaks the song for me. We are somehow conditioned to relate to the musicality, but certainly once the interest is sparked, we delve into the lyrical part of it as well. There’s a beautiful connection. Whenever I’m performing live, I try to go on to the stage absolutely rehearsed and I don’t take in a lot of requests, but two lines from a requested song always makes sense. They don’t try to correct or fixate over the words I couldn’t pronounce properly, as they are so happy that I try.”

The next panel discussion was one on the efficacy of playlists, what the Gen Z needs and the connection that they have and the one that is initiated with the ecosystem that is provided and playlists that are being curated or shared— titled ‘Soundtrack Your Life: The Playlist Phenomenon’. On the panel was Akshay Kapoor, editor of The Indian Music Diaries, singer Hanita Bhambri, Neha Ahuja, director, head of marketing, Spotify, and one of India’s biggest indie pop sensations Anuv Jain. When asked about how his growth can be charted with the songs that he recorded Anuv said, “It all started with requests to share my songs, but it sparked organically. I find myself on the cutest of playlists that are being shared between friends and romantic partners and I think, that’s the growth — a sweet mix of both. It’s a very intimate thing, and with the ecosystem that Spotify provides, it really helps a lot of artistes to find their way into the collective scene.”

The final panel of the day was on the importance of striking a balance between personal and professional called ‘The Grind vs The Peace of Mind’. On the panel were creator and singer Avanti Nagral, Suchita Salwan, CEO, Little Black Book and India’s leading pastry chef, Pooja Dhingra. Talking of striking a balance Pooja said: “I think I had to learn how to find the balance. When you are an entrepreneur, every problem is your problem, when you are juggling many hats at the same time. I started with all of it when I was 23, and there was a time, with everything going around, I felt like a burnout. I realised I had to take a step back and find myself among all of these things and all of my roles, and define balance. It’s still a work in progress but for me balance essentially means when I’m doing something, I’ll not be thinking about 10 other things, and give them their own spaces, channeling it accordingly.” Adding to the importance of the need to channel and space things out, Avanti said: “Often in the business of producing content, we have to draw a line between the person that we are and the persona that we put out there. I chose very consciously to maintain the same — indoors and out there. But it often becomes tricky where the lines blur and expectations come into question.”

To add to these was the Spotify Vibe arena which held the centre stage hosting musical acts like Anumita Nadesan serenading with her soft numbers and indie ambient pop-rock band Easy Wanderlings, composer-singer Kanishk Sheth and DJ duo The Lost Stories cooking the groove to close the night on a beautiful note.
