How a broken heart took singer Amber Lawrence from the corporate world to country music

Amber Lawrence is the darling of country music in Australia. With five Golden Guitars, two ARIA nominations and seven studio albums to her name, she has won many hearts. But ironically, it was a broken heart that first led her down the road to country.

Before Lawrence was performing live gigs at concerts, festivals and cruise ships – she is the ambassador for the at-sea music festival Cruisin’ Country – the commerce graduate was crunching numbers in the corporate world, working as an accountant.

“I could have had a pretty stable life, if I wanted it,” Lawrence tells 9Honey Celebrity. “I was good at maths at school and then I was dux of my year. I went to university, did Bachelor of Commerce, and then got a job at QANTAS in finance. Then I went on to do my chartered accounting study.”

“But there’s something about music. When your song connects with people and they’re singing your lyrics back at you, they’re the bits that you go, ‘Oh yeah, I love this job.'”

Her love for music began when she was given a guitar as a gift for Christmas. Armed with a new-found passion at the age of 23, she signed up for guitar lessons, where her tutor encouraged her to write her own music.

Hesitant at first, Lawrence then leaned right in and unlocked her musical talent. Soon after, she suffered a broken heart.

“My guitar teacher said, ‘I want you to write a song.’ But I don’t write songs,” she recalled. “Well, luckily for me, I got dumped. Not long after that devastation, I wrote a song. And all the emotions of that broken heart were able to come out and I started to fall in love with songwriting.”

Although she didn’t give up her day job, Lawrence pursued a singing career, signing up for a talent contest in 2004, where she came runner-up to a then-unknown Aussie musician.

“It was the Telstra Road to Tamworth and I came runner-up to Jessica Mauboy – I think she was about 15 at the time,” Lawrence recalled of Mauboy, who went on to place runner-up on Australian Idol in 2006.

“I juggled being a chartered accountant and a fledgling country singer for another about five years until I was kind of forced into making a decision.”

Quitting her finance career was the right call as Lawrence is now one of the most sought-after artists in the country. Ever since the borders were opened and the lockdown lifted following two years of the pandemic, Lawrence has been on the go. This year alone, she has already performed 80 shows.

And she even hopped on board the Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas in early November to headline the at-sea music festival Cruisin’ Country, which is organised by renowned festival cruise company Choose Your Cruise.

“It’s the up-close-and-personal experience that music lovers love about it,” said Lawrence, who has been part of the festival for the last 10 years, bar the pandemic. “I feel like part of our job is to engage with them and make that the X-factor of the trip for people that they get to chat with their favorite artists and get a photo and have a drink even.”

Cruising is family-friendly too, said Lawrence, who brought her husband, Martin Newman, and four-year-old son, Ike. After many days spent on the road – “I’ve been away every single weekend this year, leaving my son at home with my husband,” she says – it was nice to have her family by her side.

“Look, we’re gonna have to manage expectations when we get home because [Ike] won’t be able to have doughnuts for breakfast every day,” she laughed, before adding, “No, it’s great. It’s just really beautiful quality time.”

“I’ve been away a lot this year touring, You know, for necessary reasons of not having been able to work for a couple of years, brand new album out… and I just wanted to hit the ground running.”

Lawrence released her album, Living for the Highlights, in July and it debuted at number one on the ARIA Australian Album Charts and Country Album Charts and number five on the ARIA All Genre Album Charts, where she charted was among the likes of Harry Styles, The Weeknd, Olivia Rodrigo and Ed Sheeran.

“I put so much into this album. I mean, you believe in every album. But in this one in particular, I felt like it’s the best one I’ve done so far,” she said.

“More importantly, the people that bought the album, have really loved it and give him such great feedback. That was the plan I wanted to come to fruition and sometimes it doesn’t, but this time it did,” Lawrence said of her latest offering, which received a Best Country Album nomination at this year’s ARIAs.

While Living for the Highlights consists of uplifting songs about the pandemic and making it through, it also features delicate tracks dedicated to the hard time Lawrence went through during lockdown.

In 2020, she and her husband lost their unborn baby halfway through the pregnancy, with the singer writing You Were Mine in honour of her late son – a song she loves but can’t bring herself to perform on stage.

“Obviously, if you’ve gotten to the end of the album, there’s a terribly sad song You Were Mine, track 10, which is something that a lot of people have really related to or written to me about,” she shared.

“That happened to us in the year 2020 and locked down we lost a pregnancy at 21 weeks. I gave birth and had to go through that whole process, so it’s definitely not all highs and lows. It’s that journey of happiness and tragedy that I think everyone went through when locked down, so I think that’s where the album sits for me – it’s got that light at the end of the tunnel.”

SPACE programme to provide primary school teachers with a range of online resources as well as access to workshops and live performances

Schoolchildren will get to immerse themselves in the joy of music, from Bach to Bowie, thanks to a new programme designed to inspire creativity in the classroom.

Saffron Hall has launched Saffron Sounds: SPACE to provide primary school teachers with a range of online resources as well as access to workshops and live performances.

The initiative will help Key Stage 2 pupils fall in love with a wide range of genres, with the centrepiece being an online hub containing video resources filmed at Saffron Hall, featuring the Jess Gillam Ensemble.

Saffron Sounds: SPACE (60706508)

The content includes lively introductions and performances of music, demonstrations of key musical concepts such as pitch, rhythm and timbre as well as ideas for musical games and warm-ups for use in the classroom.

The Saffron Walden venue will also offer in-school workshops using the Saffron Sounds resources as a starting point from the spring, and a Saffron Sounds LIVE! concert for schools, featuring the Jess Gillam Ensemble, will take place in May.

“Connecting our world-class programme with schools and the wider community is central to Saffron Hall Trust’s work and we are so excited to make Saffron Sounds available for use by any school that wishes to register,” said the trust’s learning and participation director Thomas Hardy.

Saffron Sounds: SPACE (60706504)

“Jess Gillam has been a regular performer at Saffron Hall for a long time and we hope that the inspirational performances and clear demonstrations she and her ensemble have created will be of use to teachers and students across Essex and beyond.

“The online resources will also support and inspire the programme of work we deliver in schools, including a sensational Saffron Sounds LIVE! performance with Jess and her ensemble at Saffron Hall in May.”

The web pages include clearly signposted links to the National Curriculum, model music curriculum and ideas for follow-on work, allowing teachers to integrate use of Saffron Sounds into existing schemes of work or to use them as inspiration for new ways of working.

“Saffron Sounds is a superb resource that provides access to high-quality music for schools and enables young people to see, hear and benefit from the excitement of live music,” said Peter Lovell, lead officer at Essex Music Services.

Saffron Sounds: SPACE (60706502)

“The resource contains videos which helpfully explain musical details about the pieces performed. They enrich and reinforce the interrelated dimensions of music, and the teaching of any good music curriculum in school.

“I am sure all teachers will welcome the access to this resource, the enrichment it will bring to their music delivering within their school and the inspiration it will offer young people.”

Lizzo Talks ‘Racist Origin’ Of Pop Music And What It’s Like Being A Black Pop Star

Lizzo opened up about the stigma she’s faced as a Black pop music artist and how the genre has a “racist origin” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly published on Friday.

The “Special” singer talked about how Black artists have been cut off from pop music, and the history of race music or “race records” — music made by Black artists and marketed to Black people in the early 20th century.

“Race music was their way of segregating Black artists from being mainstream, because they didn’t want their kids listening to music created by Black and brown people because they said it was demonic and yada, yada, yada,” she told the publication.

Lizzo later said she thinks it’s the “coolest thing” that rap and hip-hop are now considered mainstream and pop. She added that her style of music is somewhat reminiscent of “pop diva records” by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey in the late ’80s and early ’90s, but with “a little bit of rap.”

“I think that people just have to get used to me,” she said. “I think anything that’s new, people are going to criticize and feel like it’s not for them.”

She later added, “So for people who don’t like pop music or don’t like Black artists that make pop music, they may eventually like me.”

Lizzo has talked before about some of the criticism she has faced as a Black pop artist.

She told Vanity Fair last month that she was most bothered by criticism that she makes music for white audiences.

“I am not making music for white people. I am a Black woman, I am making music from my Black experience, for me to heal myself [from] the experience we call life,” she said. “If I can help other people, hell yeah. Because we are the most marginalized and neglected people in this country. We need self-love and self-love anthems more than anybody.”

The singer’s new documentary, “Love, Lizzo” was released on HBO Max on Nov. 24.

Westerly High Music HOF announces new slate of inductees | Daily-news-alerts

WESTERLY — The Westerly High School Music Hall of Fame will induct 10 new members at a ceremony scheduled for April 2, according to Louis M. Toscano and Thomas J. Liguori, members of the selection committee.

The inductees include Angela (Lombardo) Bacari, George Bookataub, Marilyn Frechette Brockmann, Margaret Day, John Graham, Robert Guarino, Albert Norcia, Florence Soloveitzik, William Thorpe and the late David DeAngelis.

“It’s a great group,” said Toscano, who, like Liguori, is a member of the Westerly High School class of 1970. “The emphasis is on music educators.”

Members of the class of 1970 created and endowed the hall of fame as their 50th anniversary class gift in October of 2021. In November, they held an induction ceremony at Westerly’s United Theatre.

“We decided to move the ceremony to the spring so we could showcase the Westerly High School bands,” Toscano said.

Interestingly, Liguori said, three members of the Westerly High School class of 1966 are included on the list of 2023 nominees.

DeAngelis, the 2002-03 Westerly Teacher of the Year, taught music and theater at Westerly High School for 33 years. He also founded the high school’s Theater Scrapbook Company and served as music director at Our Lady of Victory Church from 1993 to 2014.

Bacari, a 1961 graduate of Westerly High School, has had a lifelong career in the music industry. A mentor to Liza Minnelli and Billy Gilman, she has made a number of hit records, toured with such celebrities as Don Rickles, Rodney Dangerfield and Norm Lewis, and has appeared on “The Merv Griffin Show,” “The Dinah Shore Show,” “The Virginia Graham Show” and many Jerry Lewis muscular dystrophy telethons.

Bookataub, also a 1961 graduate of the Westerly High School — where he was voted “Class Musician” — was a member of the first graduating class of Berklee College of Music in 1966, has served as a high school band director for 40 years, and was an instructor of percussion at the University of Maine, Portland.

Brockmann, a graduate of Westerly High School with the class of 1945, performed on Broadway in “All for Love” and road productions of “Blossom Time” and “Miss Liberty.” A regular performer at Fay’s Theater in Providence, she was the soloist at the 1948 Cherry Blossom Festival, performed at the Latin Quarter and has maintained a lifelong love of music.

Day, a 1955 graduate of Westerly High School, studied harp at Julliard School of Music, was the principal harpist for Providence Harp Ensemble and played with a number of local organizations, such as Pfizer Players, St. Pius Church Choir, Immaculate Conception Church Choir, Colonial Theatre and Mystic River Chorale.

Graham, a member of the Westerly High School class of 1966, toured Europe with School Band of America in 1966, taught music in the West Warwick schools from 1970 to 2000 and has performed with both the Rhode Island Philharmonic and Eastern Connecticut Symphony orchestras.

Guarino, also a member of the Westerly High School class of 1966, holds a master’s in voice from Manhattan School of Music and was a tenor soloist with symphony orchestras in Boston, San Antonio, Harrisburg Opera, Orchestra of New York, Princeton Pro Musica and New Haven Chorale. He has performed as lead with Michigan Opera, Atlanta Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera and Wolf Trap Opera. He is professor emeritus at The College of New Jersey and founder of Collegium Musicum, and currently directs Stonington Madrigal Singers.

Norcia, a graduate of New England Conservatory of Music, taught for more than 20 years in the Westerly school system. He composed the Babcock Junior High School song, wrote and published “Voice,” an instructional guide to singing, judged many statewide student vocal competitions and served as an evaluator of music programs in public schools.

Soloveitzik, a 1922 graduate of Westerly High School, studied at Julliard School of Music and Yale Conservatory and taught piano in Westerly for many years. Her pupils included hall of famers George Greeley and Al Copley.

Thorpe, another member of the Westerly High class of 1966, earned degrees from Boston Conservatory of Music in piano and New England Conservatory in voice. A member of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, he has performed in 32 states, was a soloist on the CBS-TV broadcast celebrating the Cole Porter Centennial, represented the United States at a United Nations concert in Shanghai, was soloist at the Bethlehem Music Festival, Missouri River Festival, Arizona Heritage Festival, Boston Lyric Orchestra, Boston Civic Symphony, and many other East Coast orchestras. He is also founder of Thorpe Music Publishing Company.

More information about the April 2 induction ceremony will be released closer to the date.

At the recently concluded 26th edition of the Parampara Series: The National Festival of Music and Dance held at Natya Tarangini in the national capital, sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan mesmerised the audience with his soulful music. We spoke with him about the state of Indian classical music. Edited excerpts from an interview:

You’re among the few prominent sarod artistes in India, also the pioneers of classical Indian music. Do you see your legacy being carried forward by upcoming sarod players in India? Do your grandchildren, too, show an interest towards the musical instrument?Covid has done lot of damage to the entertainment world but during the time the schools were closed, (my son) Ayaan (Ali Khan) started teaching Abeer and Zohaan, my grandchildren, and by the grace of God, both of them have shown a lot of interest. They are ready to practise for 2-3 hours a day. With great humility, I would like to mention that anybody playing sarod today, directly or indirectly, belongs to our gharana, which is known as Senia Beenkar gharana.

How do you define the present state of Indian music? Indian classical music and instruments seem to have lost their popularity in times of fast music, and remixes. Your thoughts on the same?Classical music was never popular. Certain musicians became popular and trendsetters. We are proud of Pandit Ravi Shankar and his contribution all over the world in introducing our music to the western world. So, there’s no fear of classical music becoming unpopular because it was never popular. There are thousands of classical musicians—vocalists and instrumentalists, but if you look back historically, very few musicians became popular and now through YouTube you can hear them and, thanks to Google, you can find out about their background. Besides my father Ustad Haafiz Ali Khan saab, there were few more ancestors like Ustad Murrad Ali Khan saab and Ustad Ashgar Ali Khan saab who were court musicians in Raj Darbhanga (part of the Mithila region, now between India and Nepal) and they produced a lot of disciples including Ahmad Ali Khan of Rampur and Pandit Radhika Mohan Mitra. So, it all depends on the musicians —how and what they present. If people find their music appealing, they become famous.

There are very few sarod artistes in India today. Do you think the government is doing enough to promote it? What measures can be taken to preserve and promote Indian classical music and instrument playing? What financial aid/ measures must be given to musical schools in India to promote the same?We don’t expect it from the government. They are doing enough in whatever ways they have decided to contribute. The government never created the musicians; so, we never waited for government encouragement. In my younger days, I had to practise every musician who became popular and successful. That’s entirely because of their parishram, saadhna, riyaz and determination. Earlier, All India Radio (AIR) was the guru for so many young musicians. Youngsters today are in a very advantageous situation. They could earlier listen to great masters on long playing records, CDs, and now on videos. I am very happy to realise that there are about 500 sarod players all over the world. There’s a sarod player in every country. The young generation is interested in classical music, and I have witnessed how Amaan and Ayaan have been receiving blessings. Indian classical music is the identity of our country. It cannot be promoted. Classical music grows on you.

You like it, or you dislike it, my advice to youngsters is to listen to all kinds of music. I don’t only endorse Indian classical but listen to folk, western classical as well. Every human being is born with sound and rhythm— the heartbeat is an indication of rhythm, conversation, recitation, chanting, singing is all part of music.

Do you see an interest in the present generation in classical music or is it limited to a certain section of fans and certain cultural events?Whoever likes music, be it western, Indian or south Indian classical music, they go and learn from their guru or some institution. Yes, there’s a lot of interest in the present generation. I have been doing residencies in Stanford University, Indiana University and The University of Chicago and have observed a great interest among students to learn music.

Live concerts and music festivals have helped in preserving and popularising Indian classical music. Do you think such fests play an important role and must be held more frequently?Music festivals have been a very important feature in our culture. I still remember in the late 1950s and 60s, there used to be at least 25 music festivals in Kolkata. It does give a chance to a common person to attend and listen to great masters but lately it is becoming difficult for organisers to organise fests because the prices of auditoriums have become very high. To organise a fest with famous musicians is a very expensive exercise.

Digital instruments are being increasingly used to produce sounds of classical instruments; will it lead to a decline in instrument playing?Every instrument is limited. For instance, veena is a very ancient instrument but south Indian veena or rudra veena has a very limited sound, they are very sensitive, so I have seen a lot of veena players in the south have electric connections to make the sound louder, they have used all kinds of digital electronic gadgets. And there’s nothing wrong with it. Many sitar players or sarod players have used digital electronic gadgets but whether it is digital or a normal instrument, the music has to be appealing, only then will people listen to it.

Are you working on any new renditions in the coming year?Rock and roll star Joe Walsh and I have come together with a three-song EP named Prayers as a tribute to doctors, frontline workers and for everyone who is going through these trying times. It’s a wonderful project where the east meets west with an idea to bring the spirit of sharing the great unique treasures of their own artistic traditions, as well as finding common ground at both the cellular and cosmic levels of two musical traditions, which are often held to be radically different. I am also currently a visiting professor at the University of Chicago. My latest release last month was Music for Hope with the Chinese pipa star Wu Man.

Let’s Talk About The Song ‘Ek Din Aap’ From Yes Boss

There’s no doubt that a good piece of music has always been appreciated in our nation, however, it had a whole different vibe to it, back in the 90s. While the recent music comprises fast-paced remixes and pop of shades in the videos, two decades back, there was nothing like an original composition.

Needless to mention, there were several blockbuster numbers that we still remember for either their melodious music, brilliant cast and heartwarming lyrics.

However, there are just a handful of songs which have the best concoction of all good things and one such song is Ek Din Aap from the movie Yes Boss (1997).

Credits: The Indian Express

This introduction song, which introduces the actors and the romantic plotline of the movie, has a separate fanbase. Let’s be honest, we used to tune into this song during our first-love phrase, didn’t we?

The melodious song introduces Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Seema (Juhi Chawla), the protagonist of the movie, to the audience. With their infectious smiles and so-in-love expressions, we couldn’t help but fall in love.

Packed full of emotions and love, this soul-stirring piece takes us to a dreamy land. The duo donned white-hued clothes, against the white backdrop, and gave us some serious fashion goals.

From his transparent white shirt to her stunning white desi attire, we were all lost in the song.

While there are a gazillion props and decoration items in music videos in recent times, this music video used simpler things like coloured frames, arc flashes and the most romantic props of all times – roses.

In the video, a single piece of rose is seen being transferred from one person to another, which depicted their connection with each other.

The song talks about how our lives can change after the right person and we can’t even imagine it. It depicts the sweet, sweet feeling that envelops our hearts after falling in love, deeply and madly. It talks about how meeting the right person can make us feel like floating in the midst of the clouds.

“Ek din iss tarah hosh kho jaayenge, paas aaye toh madhosh ho jaayenge, maine socha na tha.”

Now, coming down to the three best things about the song – the heartwarming lyrics, soulful voices and the brilliant music. With its comforting lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar, this song, sung by Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik, will definitely provide solace to your tired soul with its music by Jatin and Lalit.

“Ek din zindagi itni hogi haseen, jhoomega aasmaa, gaayegi yeh zameen, maine socha na tha.”

There’s no doubt that this song has been an important and indispensable part of our lives, ever since it was released. And, still is. We thank this movie for blessing us with this beautiful gem.

Before her time as a popular podcaster, Vogue tried her hand as a pop princess, once auditioning for a girl group being formed by none other than Louis Walsh.

The 35-year-old, who is now a mother-of-three and living in the UK alongside husband Spencer Matthews, has previously been open about her hilarious past life.

‘I can’t even remember which one it was,’ she recalls. ‘I was about 16. I am such an awful, awful singer, but I always wanted to be in a band and me and my friend always auditioned for things. I got through quite a few rounds, but it wasn’t enough.’

Cecilia joined Dublin quartet Shimma, who made a bid to represent Ireland in the Eurovision back in 2000, with the band finishing third in the Eurosong national selection.

‘We were awful,’ she remembers. ‘The four of us together were so bad. Individually we were all good and then we came together, put sparkles in our hair and on our jeans and it all went downhill.’

Donal Skehan

Now this one may surprise you, as almost all evidence of the celebrity chef and his dulcet tones have been wiped from existence, but it is true that Donal Skehan was once a budding pop star. Pic: S Meddle/ITV/Shutterstock

Now this one may surprise you, as almost all evidence of the celebrity chef and his dulcet tones have been wiped from existence, but it is true that Donal Skehan was once a budding pop star.

Donal first made his start as an aspiring pop star, having been a member of multiple bands before catching a break. In 2006, Donal joined the international boy band project Streetwize, who toured across Ireland, the UK and Sweden, and even appeared on US TV before their demise.

Cecilia wasn’t the only one who tried to represent Ireland in the Eurovision, with Donal taking part in Eurosong 2008 with the song Double Cross My Heart, ultimately losing out to Dustin the Turkey.

The Banshees Of Inisherin star was just 17 when he was approached in a nightclub by the man himself to audition, with his choice of song being the reason behind his failed audition.

‘I murdered it,’ the star recalls of his version of George Michael’s Careless Whisper, with him ultimately failing to make the cut.
