Riley Green Weighs In On How “I Wish Grandpas Never Died” Has A Line For Everybody

The Whiskey Riff Raff podcast sat down with Riley Green this week to talk small town life, college football, hunting, and country music.

Riley was recently announced as one of the opening acts on Luke Combs’ 2023 World Tour, and with his role as a country music fan favorite over the past few years, he’s an obvious choice. Many of Riley’s songs are standouts; the kind of tracks you can listen to on repeat and never tire out on.

And the best part of his songs – they make you feel a little deeper.

One song in particular became the topic of conversation on this week’s podcast – “I Wish Grandpas Never Died.” The song features a lot of impossibilities that we all wish existed: Home teams that never lose, honky tonks with no closing times, and coolers that never run out of beer.

And some of the lines really struck an emotional chord with listeners. Wishing Sundays never ended, and that everyone would make it home safely from overseas are just a few examples.

For dog lovers, “I wish good dogs never got gray and old” is a line that packs a sympathetic punch.

In the conversation, Steve compared this incredibly written line to a closer in a baseball game:

“Your line about dogs in ‘I Wish Grandpas Never Died,’ I swear to god… that line in the song was like the closer coming in at the end of a baseball game.”

For almost anyone, the idea of grandpas never dying is one that resonates deeply.

But Riley really took this song to another level with its nostalgia.

“That was one of those songs that just kind of came, ya know I wrote it by myself in about 45 minutes. I think I had the idea for a while after my granddaddy passed away… it was one of those songs that was a little tough to write… you’re talking about some pretty big things.

Wishing everybody overseas would make it home… you kind of have to top yourself as the song goes along.

There’s a lot of songs that talk about your grandpa, and I didn’t want to write a song that was about my grandpa. I kind of wanted to write it from the stance of like, these are some values my granddaddy taught me…

And the best thing about that song is what you just said, people have a line that does something to ‘em.”

And he’s right, the song has a special way of representing everyone’s feelings, and different lyrics become appreciable depending on every listener’s background and experience.

Riley shared one unique way that he’s also seen this song impact listeners:

“I had a guy come up to me after a show one time, he was an older gentleman, and he said that he never knew his grandfather, but he was a grandfather and that song got him for that reason.”

And that really sums up the country music feel.

Even if writers don’t know the impact they’ll have when they’re writing, some of the best songs are the ones that hit everyone a little differently but keep us all united and grounded by our similarities.

Devi Sri Prasad says he hasn’t watched Drishyam 2 in other language, but Hindi | Bollywood

Devi Sri Prasad, also known as DSP, is back to rule the hearts of his fans with Ajay Devgn-starrer Drishyam 2. It is the music director’s first Hindi film, underPanorama Music, with a long list of upcoming ones in the pipeline. Talking to Hindustan Times, DSP revealed how he fell in love with the film after first watching it. Also read: Ajay Devgn, Tabu get emotional as they remember late Drishyam director Nishikant Kamat

DSP said, “The best thing that happened to me was, I got to watch the footage of Drishyam 2 first. And, I fell in love with the film. From the way Abhishek Pathak directed to how each performer acted, it is brilliant. Like all of you, I am also a fan of Drishyam 1. I loved it. Naturally, I was very excited when Drishyam 2 came to me. After I saw the film, I was like ‘this is so beautiful let’s do this!’

All good things take time but not Drishyam 2’s background score. Devi Sri Prasad shared he had about two months prior to the release to score the music. “We had very little time for the release. We all worked very hard and everyone on board was very passionate. We had a great time,” he said.

While DSP calls himself a fan of the Drishyam series, he himself hasn’t watched the sequel, which has already been released in Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada. He reasoned, “Generally, I watch all the films. But, when Drishyam 2 came out in other languages I was tied to work and travelling a lot. I couldn’t get time to watch them. By the time I was approached for Drishyam 2 in Hindi. So, I haven’t actually watched it except for Hindi. I thought ‘okay, let me keep my perspective fresh.’”

The music in Drishyam 2 is catchy, intriguing and dark at the same time. With limited songs, the title track sets the mood of the film in the voice of Usha Uthup and Vijay Prakash. Clubbed with Ajay Devgn’s narration and Amitabh Bhattacharya’s lyrics, it has received a positive response from the audience.

DPS shared how easily the title track came together with the film’s team. “We started composing the title track while working in a studio in Chennai. Abhishek sir and Amitabh sir had come there. It just happened very fatafat (quickly) on-the-go. We wanted a deep vocal. I predominately used the cello as the core instrument. After I composed the tune, everybody liked it instantly. And, then Amitabh began writing. I could imagine this song in the voice of the legendary Usha Uthup. Everyone sank into the idea and I always wanted to collaborate with her. She has a very unique voice.”

Nicolas Alan is riding on the new wave of hip hop in his exotically exultant hit, Superstar ft. JCedric – Independent Music – New Music

One of the hottest names in the Salt Lake City hip hop scene, Nicolas Alan, just got hotter after launching another cathartically rhythmic RnB-tinged new wave hit with his latest single, Superstar, featuring JCedric, which allows you to traverse his ascent to the top of his game.

Never letting ego get in the way of relatability and sincerity, Alan has a distinct way of versing directly to you as he proves with his dynamically fluid bars that adversity doesn’t ever have to be the end of your story.

While the originality in his sound comes as a result of having an eclectic array of musical interests, the soul in his sound comes via the roadblocks he’s overcome that have enabled him to reach notable heights in his career. It should go without saying, he’s one to watch.

Superstar dropped on October 28th; catch it on Spotify.

Malibu shares new song “Atlantic Diva”

Scammers are posing as FADER staffers on Instagram and DistroKid. Read more here.

Malibu is a French musician who revealed herself as an essential voice in ambient music with the song “Held” from the classic Pan Records compilation Mono No Aware. Her debut EP One Life was released to great acclaim in 2019, and since then she’s also made waves for dj lostboi, a side project that transforms Billboard hits into lonely gas planets.

This Friday (November 18), Malibu will share her sophomore EP Palaces of Pity via UNO NYC. Its latest single “Atlantic Diva” is another expansive entry in her healing discography — each melodic element, from Malibu’s sighs to the surrounding synth pads, captures a rare and deeply moving kind of internal stillness that makes the song feel more like a gift than a single.

“Where One Life was born of anger and raging seas, Palaces of Pity is calm,” Malibu said of the new EP in a press statement. “Storms have passed, it’s boring almost. Each track is like a collage of progressing synthetic string chords and airy reverbed vocals. The songs are generously brought to their layered life with recordings of Florian Le-Prisé on delayed guitars and cello play by the hands of Oliver Coates and Madelen Dressler-Vollsaeter. As its closing track’s title ‘Iliad’ presumes, Palaces of Pity is somewhat of an epic journey, a rather lonesome one, a ship faithfully trailing toward somewhere silent and loud all at once. Things do fade, we do fall so far out of love…”

Pianist Lang Lang shares the music that has shaped him

Chinese pianist Lang Lang has won plaudits for his mastery of the classical repertoire, performing with conductors from Daniel Barenboim to Simon Rattle. But his extrovert performances of works from Chinese folksongs to Metallica and Herbie Hancock have also inspired millions of children to learn the piano.

On his new album, The Disney Book, Lang Lang presents iconic movie melodies, reimagined in new versions written especially for him by some of the world’s leading arrangers.

Here, Lang Lang reveals the music that has helped to mould him as a performer.

Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is my all-time favourite, as well as the piece that launched my career. I listened to it in my little dormitory at the Shengyang Conservatory, and I was amazed at how powerful classical music could be. Before that I had listened to beautiful Mozart, but one day I heard these huge chords at the opening of the concerto, and I thought, ‘Wow!! This is something.’ Later this concerto launched my career when I played it with the Chicago Symphony [standing in for André Watts], and I’ve played it many times since.

‘As a ten-year-old in 1992 I watched a video cassette of Glenn Gould playing Bach’s Goldberg Variations on my small television. I’d never heard Bach played this way. Such a strong personality! You think of Bach as being economic, but the way Gould played it was like a Picasso – he totally changed the shape, the melody, the voice, the articulation. It was the same material, but he turned it into another, amazing creature.

More recently I played the Goldberg Variations in concert and I’ve recorded two versions, one a live recording at Bach’s Thomaskirche in Leipzig and another in the studio. Glenn Gould said it’s much better to record in a studio, and I also agree, but there’s something about the spontaneity of a live concert – those special moments, that you don’t get in the studio.

‘As students we are always practising exercises by composers like Czerny and Moszkowski, but Chopin’s 24 Études are on another level. They are not just about pure technique; they are about serving the music. This is why we have to practise, to make the bridge between the mechanics and real music, and this is what Chopin delivers in his Études. The first one I played was the ‘Black Key’ Étude, Op. 10 No. 5, and that was a very difficult piece for me at eight years old. Each year I learnt five or six more until, at 13, I played the complete Chopin Études in concert.

‘Nessun Dorma’, performed by Luciano Pavarotti, has to be one of my five choices. He has this special skill of making sunshine in the music. There are other great artists like Plácido Domingo or Jonas Kaufmann, but Pavarotti is The One. Somehow when he sings, that’s it – music is supposed to be like that. He has the talent, he has the high notes and he has that sound. It’s something you cannot practise – you have to be born with it, and what’s more, he brings this music to everyone, even people who don’t understand classical music.

‘I met Pavarotti in my late teens in Philadelphia, on one of his last tours, and I gave him a recording of my Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto to listen to. He wrote me an email which I still have, saying that he could see sunshine in my performance of the concerto. That was really inspirational for an 18-year-old!

‘We Are the World’ by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie is the song that breaks through all the barriers in this world. If we had more songs like that, there would be no wars. I play it often in charity concerts – including last year in Central Park during a charity concert for children.

‘I have a Foundation for children and I believe you have to be very creative in your approach to music education. There isn’t just one way of teaching; don’t stick rigidly to rules but let children find their own voice. My wife [pianist Gina Alice Redlinger] has been introducing our young son to music through some of the beautiful classical and crossover pieces from her album, Wonderworld. I think the pieces on my latest Disney album will be perfect for his early listening education. After all, my first experience of classical music came from an episode of the cartoon Tom and Jerry, ‘The Cat Concerto’!

Lang Lang’s new album The Disney Book is out now.

David Warner Dances To Rashmika Mandanna’s Whattey Beauty Song With A Twist

David Warner rules fans’ hearts with his highly entertaining videos on social media. The Australian cricketer often takes the masses on a laugh riot by sharing rib-tickling videos of his face swapped with Indian film stars, especially Tollywood celebrities, in some popular songs. And, this time around, David caught the attention of many after he edited his face on Rashimika Mandanna’s face in a popular Telugu song.

On Monday, David Warner posted a video clip of Rashmika’s song Whattey Beauty from the film Bheeshma with a hilarious twist. He swapped his face with the actress’s face in the video, which left the internet in splits. Along with posting the video, he wrote, “sooooo sorry for this one.”

Well, this is not the first time that David Warner has shared a funny edited video of himself dancing to the tunes of Telugu songs. About a month ago, he posted an edited video of himself dancing to Butta Bomma, which starred Allu Arjun and Pooja Hegde. David also grooved to Guru Randhawa’s popular Punjabi song Slowly Slowly in one of his other videos, which had also gone viral on social media. The 33-year-old is a Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) player in the Indian Premier League (IPL). As a result, he is well aware of Telugu songs as well as actors.

On the other hand, Rashmika Mandanna recently made her Bollywood debut in Goodbye, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Neena Gupta. The film, directed by Vikas Bahl, also featured Pavail Gulati, Elli AvrRam, Sunil Grover, and Sahil Mehta in key roles. Its plot revolved around self-discovery, the value of family, and the celebration of life in all circumstances. Goodbye, produced by Ekta Kapoor, was released in theatres on October 7, 2022, and it didn’t manage to rake in good numbers at the box office.

Apollo Brown & Philmore Greene Team Up For ‘Cost Of Living’ Album

From Detroit to Chicago, Apollo Brown and Philmore Greene have teamed up for a new album, Cost of Living.

What are the consequences of living in this f*cked up world? Greene and Brown waste no time breaking down this question with unequivocal clarity. It’s an inquiry that looms at the core of their elegiac and existential soundtrack to modern inner city life. How can one escape the systemic traps that have ensnared generations since time immemorial? What does it mean to make the right choices? And if you emerge from the chaos to live a beautiful life, how do you overcome the survivor’s guilt and lingering trauma?

Over the course of 15 tracks, which includes “Paradise” with Evidence, Apollo provides a perfect canvas for PG to share his experience of growing up on the westside of Chicago – where he saw his first dead body in his early teens (“This Is Me”), where he lost his brother to street violence only a few years later, and where he turned to the booth as a refuge and way to share his hard-fought wisdom.

Press play and be sure to add Cost of Living wherever you get music.
